The Terrior - Moppa Hill

Hand-planted in 1996/97 with clone 1654 Shiraz at 330m elevation, this small vineyard is situated on the east-facing slope of Moppa Hill. The Moppa locality comprises a small sub-region on the north-western side of the Barossa Valley. The 1.6ha vineyard features 40 rows trellised in a north-south direction. The top layer of the vineyard soil is representative of wind-blown siliceous sands and ironstone conglomerates over a relatively thin horizon of impervious pebbly grey clay. The subsoil B Horizon layer of several meters is a free-draining white Moppa sand.

The Grower

With a passion for all things wine, including an understanding of the values of a biodynamic and organic approach to nurturing successful vineyards to produce quality fruit, our vineyard manager in collobaration with the family owned Moppa Springs Vintners is focussed on a quality product rather than maximising yield. The fruit from this vineyard tends to be tightly structured and elegant, but with powerful flavours. The aim is to maintain a high quality offering from the property so that the winemaker can then focus on producing small batch, hand crafted quality wine.

FOLLOW OUR STORY

  • Rich Local History

One of the Barossa’s hidden secrets, the Moppa locality is situated in the NW corner of the Barossa within the Hundred of Belvidere which was proclaimed in 1851.

Moppa is arguably the most historic and premium sub-region within the Barossa. It is home to some of the oldest vines in the world with plantings of Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro and Cabernet Sauvignon dating back to the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

Moppa vines are naturally low-yielding and consistently provide parcels of fruit unparalleled in quality.

  • Moppa Springs Rd

We are situated only 5km NE of Greenock Post Office and 5.7km NW of the Nurrioopta Co-Op. Nearby, the towns of Tanunda and Angaston are also only a short drive away.

Nearby vineyards produce highly sought after fruit that features in some of the Barossa’s top offerings, including Penfolds Grange, Izway Oscar & Matilda and Torbreck Runrig.

The Moppa soil profile is a patchwork of sand, ironstone & quartz over deep clay. With an elevation of over 300m the Moppa region is one of the higher points in the Barossa Valley, providing cooler conditions which allow for long, steady ripening.

  • Vintage 2019

After a dry winter and hot summer (including a record 46C day in January) the 2019 Harvest resulted in lower yields, not only in Moppa, but right across the Barossa. Hand crafted from small berries and less compact bunches, our first release of the Aeronaut is now available.
